New Balance Hierro
Ten Years of Development for One of the Most Versatile Trail Series - New Balance Hierro
New Balance Fresh Foam X Hierro is a trail running series designed for versatile use on trails – from everyday training to long-distance races.
History: From Flexible Trail Shoe to Max-Cushion Platform
The Hierro series was launched in 2015 and has since become a staple in New Balance's trail offerings. Over the decade, it has undergone significant transformation: the first generation focused on a more flexible, "grounded" feel, closer to a classic trail shoe. Over time, the philosophy shifted towards enhanced cushioning, lower drop, and rocker-assisted ride capable of handling ultra distances. This evolution is best seen in the comparison of the two latest generations – v8 and v9.
Hierro v8: The Crossover of Old and New Philosophy
The v8 version stands right at the boundary between the older and newer approaches – it combines the comfort of the road series 1080 with a highly grippy trail outsole. The Fresh Foam X midsole is one of the softest foams in New Balance's lineup and now contains approximately 40% biodegradable materials. The Vibram Eco-Step Natural outsole is made from over 90% petroleum-free components and, thanks to Micro-Traction Lug technology, offers exceptional grip on lighter to moderately challenging terrain – reviewers report virtually no wear on the tread even after more than 160 km of use.
Hierro v9: A Bold Restart with Enhanced Cushioning
The v9 version represents a more pronounced reboot of the entire series – it abandons the flexible, "grounded" character of earlier versions in favor of a stiffer, maximally cushioned platform with a low 4 mm drop and a stack height of 42 mm in the heel / 38 mm in the forefoot. The dual-layer midsole combines a softer top layer for comfortable landings with a firmer base that protects the foot from rocks and roots. The newly emphasized rocker in both the heel and forefoot provides a smoother, momentum-supporting ride. The outsole transitions to Vibram MegaGrip – a sticky rubber compound balanced between grip and durability in wet and dry conditions, with minimal wear even after extended use.
Durability
Both generations are among the more durable trail models on the market – you can realistically expect a lifespan of 500–700 km depending on terrain and running style, with the outsole typically lasting longer than that of competing lighter trail shoes.
Who Is This Model For
The Hierro is for you if you're looking for a comfortable trail shoe for daily training and longer runs – the v8 is better suited for simpler, less demanding terrain, while the v9 can handle ultra distances thanks to its enhanced cushioning. Both versions are less suitable for muddy conditions or extremely technical, slippery descents.

Details
More than a century of tradition based on stable and reliable movement. These are the New Balance shoes, which have become a symbol around which a cult of comfortable walking and running lovers has been created during the 20th century. But beyond sneakers, New Balance is also at the forefront of everyday and sports fashion. Every year, a special collection is released and more than one football team boasts the NB logo on their jersey.
The history and development of New Balance shoes
On our website and practically anywhere else, you won't find a large number of brands as old as New Balance. In fact, as early as 1906, the New Balance Arch Support Company was formed to provide specific aids for each shoe. These were designed to not only provide comfort to the then not-so-comfortable shoes, but more importantly stability by supporting the arch of the foot - hence the name New Balance.
However, New Balance sneakers as shoes did not start to come out until many years later. Specifically, the first silhouette of a New Balance shoe saw the light of day in 1960 when the Trackster model came out. It was unique among the others primarily because it was the first outright running shoe with a crimped sole.
But the marketing didn't work very well and for a long time New Balance shoes were still a community affair. It wasn't until the 1970s that sales started to grow, with the popularisation of running, which was also linked to the hosting of the now iconic Boston Marathon. New Balance shoes began to become popular among runners and the company slowly but surely became a leading manufacturer of running shoes.
For running? Yes, but also no.
Today, however, men's and women's New Balance sneakers aren't just a running thing. Over years of branding and image building, they have become sneakers for almost every situation. Today we wear New Balance shoes before a trip to the countryside, a city walk but also a social event and still undoubtedly before a sporting performance.
New Balance sneakers can therefore be found in a variety of different designs. Men's and women's, in black and white and many other colours. The most popular models today are mainly New Balance sneakers with the 247, 373, 574 and 997. Of course, you can find all these New Balance shoes on Footshop. But besides these, there are also many others and the ranges of the latest silhouettes are constantly growing. So before you make your final choice, carefully examine all of our New Balance sneakers.
A record for stability.
New Balance footwear today is not afraid to venture into collaborations with other fashion brands, but also artists or athletes. It's not so long ago that the NB logo also started to appear on the jerseys of some football teams, and it's not impossible that the brand's influence and reach will continue to grow in the future. New Balance sneakers are worn, for example, by Trayvon Bromell, the American sprinter who became the first junior ever to break the magic ten-second mark in the 100 metres. Could it be that New Balance shoes helped him to achieve this?
In short,New Balance sneakers are a phenomenon that we have been wearing for many decades and everything indicates that we will be wearing them for many decades to come. And hopefully in greater numbers. The original intention of the brand, to make wearing sneakers on a daily basis more enjoyable, has not left New Balance shoes even more than a century after the legendary phrase was introduced to the market.
So be part of a tradition with a clear vision and name your sneakers with the iconic NB in the logo.
