Birkenstock Tokio
The clog designed for professionals that conquered streetwear and Dior - Birkenstock Tokio
Originally developed for healthcare workers and hospitality staff who spend all day on their feet, this shoe has transformed over decades into one of the most sought-after streetwear silhouettes. Birkenstock Tokio is a clog with a heel strap that combines professional functionality with a bold design heritage. It emerged during a time when Japanese culture heavily influenced pop culture and design worldwide, and it still carries the name of the Japanese metropolis. Over the years, it has collaborated with the fashion house Dior, making it one of the most striking examples of the journey from work footwear to fashion icon.
History: from work footwear for healthcare professionals to luxury collaborations
The Tokio Birkenstock was introduced in 1987, primarily for professionals in healthcare and hospitality who needed reliable footwear for all-day standing and walking. The design is based on the Boston model, a clog designed by Karl Birkenstock in the 70s – the key difference of Tokio is the added heel strap, providing extra security and stability for active wear. Over its decades of existence, it has inspired numerous significant fashion collaborations, including one with Dior, and recently saw a new evolution in the Tokio Suede, which has become extremely popular in contemporary streetwear.
Technology: contoured insole and deep heel cup
What makes Tokio comfortable even after hours of standing are these features:
- Contoured cork-latex insole: A design crafted down to the last detail, making your foot feel like it's standing on sand – ensuring comfort even after hours of continuous wear.
- Deep heel cup: Supports the foot tissue and keeps the heel bone securely in place, providing the clog with nearly the same support as a closed shoe.
- Heel strap: A key difference from the Boston model – adds security and stability for active, all-day wear.
- Soft leather or suede: The upper gradually adapts to the shape of your foot like a second skin.
Who the model is for
Tokio is both a fashion and lifestyle silhouette – perfect for you if you're looking for a comfortable clog with real practical use and a strong fashion status, whether for all-day wear at work or as a standout streetwear silhouette with a history.

Rien à redire! commande qui arrive dans les temps et produit authentique !! je recommande à 100%!!
Are you a fan of tried-and-tested silhouettes and perfect workmanship? Then keep an eye out, because few brands on Footshop date their roots back to the 18th century. For almost 200 years, Germany's Birkenstock was an orthopaedic shoe brand, but it wasn't until the 1960s that it became a global phenomenon, when American Margot Fraiser became so enamored with the comfort of these shoes that she decided to expand production to include San Francisco. The open toed shoe with a cork sole quickly became highly sought after and success was not long in coming. Give in to the benefits of slippers and sandals and treat your feet to a piece from our range!
