New Balance 991

The Aesthetics of Quiet Luxury, Craftsmanship, and Premium Materials - New Balance Made in UK

In an era of fast fashion and mass production, true luxury is defined by time, patience, and a human touch. The New Balance Made in UK collection, crafted in a historic workshop in the English village of Flimby, represents the pinnacle of shoemaking artistry in a curated selection by Footshop. It's not just sport retro; it's a deeply considered design manifesto followed by creative directors and fashion enthusiasts from Tokyo to New York. Flimby operates not as a typical factory, but as a craft studio where icons of modern high-end streetwear are born.

Artisanal Savoir-Faire: Where Tradition Meets Modern Tailoring

The story of this collection has been written since 1982. While global trends constantly change, the approach to creation in Cumbria remains uncompromising. Each pair from the Made in UK line is the result of precise handwork by local master shoemakers. From hand-cutting the finest leathers to final stitching with millimeter precision – every detail bears the signature of human hands. This respect for craftsmanship gives the sneakers a character that machines simply cannot replicate. It's the essence of slow fashion, perfectly resonating with the aesthetics of quiet luxury and minimalism.

Sensory Material Architecture: A Selection Without Compromise

The uppers of the Made in UK models celebrate premium textures and top-quality European materials. New Balance works with materials you’d expect to find in haute couture salons:

• Top-Quality Full Grain Leather and Nubuck: Exceptionally soft leather from local tanneries that gains a unique, sophisticated patina over time.

• Fine Pigskin Suede: Dense, velvety matte suede adds depth and a rich 3D texture to the silhouettes.

• Progressive Cushioning in Elegant Packaging: Beneath the artistically crafted upper lie iconic cushioning systems like ENCAP® and ABZORB®, ensuring flawless comfort without disrupting the clean lines of the shoe.

How to Style New Balance Made in UK in a High-Fashion Spirit?

Models like New Balance 991 or 1500 have long transcended the boundaries of sports fields. They have become sought-after elements for avant-garde styling and unconventional fashion combinations.

At Footshop, we see them as the perfect counterpoint to formal and deconstructed fashion. We recommend pairing them with oversized wool suits, wide flowing trousers with pleats, or minimalist trench coats made from heavy materials. They also work great in contrast with premium Japanese selvedge denim and luxurious knits. Discover this exclusive collection that proves the best things are not created for fleeting moments on social media, but for the timeless elegance that defines contemporary street style.

The British sneaker icon that took the legendary 990 further - New Balance 991

There are few British sneakers that have become a symbol of craftsmanship like the New Balance 991. It was created as a modern response to the legendary 990 and is still handcrafted in a small English village, attracting visitors from around the world to watch the production. The shoe introduced several technical innovations to the 99X line and has defined the modern face of British design for New Balance since its inception. Over two decades after its launch, the 991 remains the flagship of the entire Made in UK production line.

History: a modern successor to the iconic 990

The 991 debuted in 2001 as part of the 99X series and was the first shoe in the line to feature ABZORB cushioning in both the forefoot and heel. The 991 "filtered" the legendary 990 through a more modern lens – a slimmer, more aggressive toe shape gave the silhouette a sharper character, while the ABZORB cushioning foam peeked out not only from under the heel but also from the front of the shoe for the first time. The shoe also introduced a new rubber outsole compound called Ndurance. It has been produced since the beginning in the British factory in Flimby, a small village in Cumbria with just under two thousand residents, giving it a unique market position with the "Made in England" label – a blend of innovation and craftsmanship. This combination has made Flimby a place that sneaker communities from New York to Tokyo keep an eye on, despite being an otherwise unremarkable English village.

Technology: ENCAP, ABZORB, and FuelCell

What makes the 991 technically exceptional even after more than twenty years are these elements, most prominently developed in the current v2 version:

• ENCAP technology: A polyurethane shell encapsulating softer foam in the heel – combines cushioning with stability, the signature two-tone stripe on the side of the shoe is a result of this construction.
• ABZORB SBS pods: Elastomeric cushions along the midsole adding extra compression and bounce upon impact, similar to gel technologies from competitors.
• FuelCell midsole (v2 version): Full-length foam taken from the brand's highest-performing running models, achieving up to 54% energy return in tests – providing noticeable propulsion despite the traditional rubber frame around it.

Design and materials

The 991 typically combines premium suede and mesh, with some versions featuring nubuck, leather, or synthetic materials – all handcrafted in Flimby by the same team of artisans who produce the sister models 992 and 1500. This handcrafted approach and European material base are the main reasons why the 991 is priced significantly higher than mass-produced models from the brand.

Who the model is for

The 991 is a lifestyle silhouette for you if you seek archival British design with a real technological history and craftsmanship – ideal for heritage silhouette enthusiasts who appreciate the blend of vintage aesthetics with modern comfort.
