J.W. Foster, the founder of Reebok, created the first studded running shoe (the predecessor of today's trainers) in 1895. The company's name was given by two of Foster's grandsons who found the word in an old Afrikaans dictionary. Its meaning was the naming of a species of antelope, symbolizing the speed and grace that a man running in a Reebok represents.
